Biography
Benneth Nwankwo (born February 22, 1995) is a prolific Nigerian filmmaker, documentary photographer, and author who has become a key architect of the contemporary creative scene in Anambra State and beyond. Born in Igando, Lagos State, but originally hailing from Orumba North, Anambra, Nwankwo’s career is defined by a unique ability to merge social advocacy with high-quality visual storytelling. He first garnered national attention in 2017 as a documentary photographer when his images of a nine-year-old boy hawking groundnuts went viral. The exposure did more than just showcase his technical skill; it led to direct educational support for the child, cementing Nwankwo’s reputation as a "humanitarian with a lens." This commitment to social themes transitioned seamlessly into his film career. By 2020, he made history by hosting Akaraka: Anambra Through A Lens, the first indigenous photo exhibition in the state. As a director and producer, Nwankwo has become a leading figure in the Nigerian web series movement. His filmography includes the acclaimed high school drama Like Filtered Water (2021) and the gripping crime series Class of Secrets (2023–2024). His versatility is further evidenced by his direction of the dance drama series Breakout (2022) and the feature film A Place Between Colours. His work often tackles complex issues like police brutality—seen in his thriller This Is My Story—and the nuances of the Nigerian condition, which he also explores through satire in his book, How To Write About Nigeria.

In a world where every move has consequences, Chess follows the lives of individuals from completely different worlds, bound together by love, ambition, betrayal, and survival. Dami is a rebellious but fiercely loyal teenager whose actions take a dark turn after a violent confrontation forces her to face her past and the damage she has caused. Lucy, a powerful corporate leader, battles sexism and personal heartbreak while dealing with a life-changing diagnosis that threatens her future. Jordan and Grace are deeply in love, but their relationship is tested when a life-saving surgery becomes financially out of reach. Meanwhile, Mandy plays a dangerous game of manipulation and revenge, unaware that her actions will collide with lives she cannot control. As secrets unfold and destinies intersect, one truth becomes clear: everyone is playing, but not everyone understands the game.
