Born January 8, 1987, in Stockwell, London, to Nigerian parents, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before rising to prominence with her Tony-winning performance in The Color Purple on Broadway. The London-born superstar is made an MBE in the New Year's Honours list for her musical and acting work.

“If it feels like [an opportunity] might be something that I'm going to have to learn from ... then I say yes,” says Erivo. “The problem is a lot of those things are showing up right now.”
