The Headies, originally known as the Hip Hop World Awards, has been a significant force in recognizing and celebrating musical excellence in Nigeria since its inception in 2006. Over the years, its influence has expanded beyond Nigeria, honoring artists across Africa and even international acts collaborating with African musicians.
In a groundbreaking move, the 17th edition of The Headies, with its nominee list released on February 17, 2025, introduced a brand-new category: Best Movie Soundtrack. The inaugural nominees for this category include Aníkúlápó: Rise of the Sceptre, Breath of Life, Kill Boro, Oríṣà, Water & Garri and A Tribe Called Judah.
The addition of this category reflects a significant shift in Nollywood’s approach to music in film. In the past, filmmakers primarily relied on pre-existing songs or instrumental scores to set the mood and convey emotions. However, in recent years, there has been a growing trend of creating original soundtracks specifically tailored for movies, enhancing storytelling through music.
One notable example was Prisoner Song, which gained massive traction on social media in 2024. The song was composed for Funding Messiah, an upcoming film by Oscar Heman-Ackah. This marked a shift toward intentional music production for Nigerian films.
Going further back, in 2022, Kayode Kasum and Dare Olaitan directed and produced Obara’M, a Nigerian musical film with its original songs made available on digital streaming platforms. Similarly, comedian Bright Okpocha (Basketmouth) made his cinematic debut with A Ghetto Love Story, incorporating original music for the film’s soundtrack.

While this trend is becoming more prominent now, Nollywood has had pioneers in movie soundtracks. Stanley Okorie, for example, created unforgettable soundtracks for classic films like The Last Burial and Karashika. His work laid the foundation for what is now being recognized and celebrated on a larger scale.
This new category is a welcome development, not just for The Headies but for the Nigerian film industry as a whole. It acknowledges the hard work of composers, music directors, and artists who contribute to the magic of cinema through sound. As Nollywood continues to grow in global recognition, original soundtracks will undoubtedly play a crucial role in elevating its storytelling and artistic impact.
With this step, The Headies once again proves that it is evolving alongside the industry it represents, ensuring that every aspect of musical excellence gets the recognition it deserves.

Funke Akindele has once again proven her dominance in Nollywood, sweeping all major categories in the 2024 FilmOne box office rankings.
